STEPHEN MINISTRY

Stephen Ministers are members of St. John who are trained to provide one-to-one, Christ-centered care. They have a compassionate heart for those who are hurting, and they’re equipped with caring ministry skills. A Stephen Minister typically has one care receiver at a time and meets with that person once a week to listen, care, pray, encourage, and offer emotional and spiritual support.

Stephen Ministry is appropriate for people experiencing: grief, divorce, cancer, hospitalization, physical rehabilitation, long-term care, chronic illness, terminal illness, job loss, loss of a home, military deployment, the onset of a disability, spiritual crisis, and many other life struggles.

Stephen Ministry supports St. John’s mission by extending its capacity to care for people in the name of Christ. In this way, Stephen Ministry multiplies the pastor’s care, ensuring no one “falls through the cracks” or suffers in isolation. It also embodies the congregation’s mission to love and serve others as Christ loves us, turning faith into action. And it builds up the body of Christ, strengthening relationships and deepening the congregation’s sense of community, compassion, and discipleship.

In Acts 6, Stephen was among those chosen to provide caring ministry to those in need. Since Jesus’ time, caring ministry has been a hallmark of the Christian faith community.
